#52 Welcome to the Desert of the Real

It’s no surprise that I truly love the 1999 film, “The Matrix.” If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a go. Before that, however, I’m about to ruin some of it for you. Sorry in advance.

The movie essentially proposes that we humans are simply hooked into huge farms of pods that feed off the electrical energy we produce by our mere existence. To keep us alive, yet docile, our minds are collectively plugged into a computer program. We “live” day to day in this program, going to work, getting married, watching TV, and so on, until we die. We enjoy the nature of the system so much, and depend upon it so deeply, that we will defend our inclusion in it. We have no idea that it is an unnatural place to be because we have never really been anywhere else. The real world is a dark and dangerous place, and nothing like the artificial world created by the machine programmers. But we have never seen it, and it an impossible thought to those clinging to the safety and security of the Matrix.

And thus, is where the story begins.

During the film, a man named Morpheus plucks a man he calls Neo from the Matrix. As expected, Neo has a challenging time grasping that his whole life has been a fabrication. During his reeducation process, Morpheus tries to teach Neo he has to recalculate how he looks at everything.

Neo: This isn't real...

Morpheus: What is "real"? How do you define "real"? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then "real" is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain...

[Turns on TV] This is the world that you know. The world as it was at the end of the 20th century. It exists now only as part of a neural interactive simulation that we call "The Matrix." You've been living in a dream world, Neo.

I’m about to go “off the reservation” here, so bear with me.

This is not far from the truth.

I’ve said before that we are spirit inhabiting a “meatsuit.” Numerous books discuss how we are, all of us, collective holographic projections into this quantum matrix of endless possibilities. When you go to work, the people you see around you at the office or factory floor are mere puppets operated by a bundle of spirit energy on another energetic plane functioning at a different frequency than that which we can interact.

Yeah, I know that was tough. Let me break it down a bit more. Think of it like a radio.

Some of us are old enough to remember those older cars with those big radios that had a red line to tell you where you were on the dial. There was a big tuning knob to direct the red line to the next stereo station. The dial went from 88.1Mhz to 107.9Mhz. That’s 88,100,000hz, or cycles per second, and 107,900,000hz. The human ear can only detect sound from 20hz to 20,000hz. The FCC has declared by Federal law that radio can only operate between the two frequencies previously mentioned. So, we need a machine (radio) to slow those frequencies down so we can hear them. Furthermore, if we are tuned in to 88.3Mhz, the radio can’t also pick up 103.1Mhz. This is how the rest of our universe is similarly constructed. All things happen at once, at the same time, just at different speeds.

Out of all the frequencies available to us here on this single universe out of the multiverse, we are only able to interact with about four percent. For instance, we can’t see infrared or ultraviolet light. Most other animals can. We can’t hear sounds above 20khz. Many other animals can. We can’t see X-Rays or Gamma Rays. This doesn’t mean they don’t exist, because we know that they do, it just means our eyes can’t pick them up.

I’ll have to devote another article to how the conscious and subconscious minds work and how we can interact with more of our world – maybe up to about 4.25 %.

When Morpheus told Neo that our entire world was simply how our minds interpret incoming information, he was quite correct. Our eyes recognize the color blue because when photons of light hit a blue object, all the colors of the prism are absorbed by the object, except obviously the color blue, which is then reflected in all directions. Our eyes pick up on the wavelength of the reflected photons and our minds translate those frequencies as blue.

Nay, more, what will really “Bake your noodles”, as said in the Matrix, is that you’ve never really ever touched anything in this universe. Yeah, I said it.

Everything in this universe is made of atoms, comprised of mostly empty space. Atoms are positively charged nuclei surrounded by an ever-shifting cloud of negatively charged electrons. The atoms that make up our bodies are bundled into molecules, then organelles, then cells, then tissues, organs, and structures.

They are connected by covalent bonds. Because each atom as surrounded by negatively charged electrons, they repel each other like magnet poles. Your skin, being softer than the coffee cup you lift, is compressed by the repulsion. Your nerves pick up this compression and report it back to your brain as a signal which your proprioceptors interpret as, “I’ve touched something.”

Ultimately, we truly are living in a matrix. Even the air between us, which appears as empty space, is made of the same atoms. Air is comprised 99% nitrogen and oxygen, with argon making up most of the remaining 1%. We truly are just bundles of energy floating around in an energy soup. We are atoms, collected as meatsuits, interacting with other meatsuits, trying to make something of these lives we projected ourselves into this realm. Alan Watts once said, “We are the universe experiencing itself.” And I like that a lot.

We arrived here to experience our lives as we have designed them. We chose the date and time of our arrival, the parents we would have, our children, our first and second spouses, our difficulties, our challenges, our handicaps, our victories and triumphs, our accomplishments. Some authors have written that this matrix is a collective consciousness projected hologram world (a classroom) we project ourselves into time and again so we can learn and grow. I agree. This means that our challenges are not meant to put us down, but to allow us to rise up.

Now that I have shown you what the matrix is, will you escape? Will you unplug and help to save the countless trapped others who think this world is a punishment?

This is much like the allegory of Plato’s cave.

Plato suggested a cave where men are trapped, staring at a wall. Upon the wall are shadow figures projected by a candle. The shadow figures are like a puppet play, interacting and portraying parts like a play or movie. One man escapes and sees the real world. Upon seeing real trees, skies, rivers, and other people who have never seen the cave, he becomes determined to go back and rescue his comrades. They never believe him and call him crazy for thinking that such a world is possible.

Unlike The Matrix film, the world outside here is not a barren wasteland run by machines. We exist in a spirit world surrounded by countless other spirits. We make a choice to incarnate into the multiverse. We can choose Earth, or a billion other worlds, on this universe, or perhaps innumerable other worlds on other universes. If you're reading this simple prose, you've chosen to incarnate here on Earth. Welcome to the classroom.

Some folks believe that when we die we go to place in the sky and wear a white robe and sit on a cloud and play the harp. That sounds pretty boring to me.

The world is truly a beautiful place. It’s not trying to punish you. It is not rotten. The world is a place of endless manifestation and boundless possibility. You simply need to unplug and accept.

I found a beautiful article on how to escape the matrix. I won't even try to paraphrase or steal from it. I'll include it here so you can read it yourself.

You are magnificent just as you are. You chose to be here. You chose the challenges you have faced and are facing. Rise above, overcome, be victorious.
