This Week in Tai Chi

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Tai Chi practice is exactly that -- practice. There will be mistakes. There will never be a time in any future where your form will be perfect. Self criticism only defeats the purpose of Tai Chi, which is to be in the moment. Each movement in the form should be enjoyed from beginning to end. I like to tell Tai Chi and Karate students "let each movement have its day in the sun." Every movement from point A to point B should have a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Then you go on to the next movement.

As we practice, we enjoy each part of the form. We are totally involved in each piece as it happens. We expect nothing, and we accept everything. Our practice is an opportunity to disconnect from the rest of the world and its issues and become totally absorbed into what we are doing for a short time. But to enjoy its benefits we must do that and do it completely. When you practice, lose yourself in the act. Let "the dancer become the dance."
