The Quietude of Snow

The recent weather reminded me how peaceful snowfall is. Things are much quieter during the snow. It seems time stands still while the white fluff is falling.

Indeed, most growth occurs during a freeze or during the winter times. Trees lose their leaves in autumn and go dormant during the winter. This is when roots grow deeper, and rings are added for strength against the icy winds.

And it is often so with us.

Often, when we think things aren’t moving in a forward direction, it is because the universe wants us to consider our roots. Occasionally, the universe will give us a number of hints that changes are heading our way before they collide with us. If we aren’t ready to change with the current of life, we will be forced to confront our lives and evaluate our circumstances.

Recently a number of clients have reminded me that the universe will ensure that we continue to grow or it will erect roadblocks we must overcome. They faced several health crises and career path detours that forced them to leave jobs, evaluate their lifestyles, change their diets, and consider pursuit of their forgotten dreams. The universe left them in the quietude of falling snow until they examined their lives. I encouraged them to consider their circumstances and induced them to confront their realities. I have convinced them that the snow isn’t meant to bury them, only to slow them down so they can look at the world with new lenses and tackle new challenges with renewed vigor.

I have experienced the silence of winter’s snowy embrace. I received messages for a few years that I should quit my job and run my business full time. By devoting the eight hours each day that I spent at work to my business, I could earn a living by helping people find their own health and truth. I refused, for fear of walking away from certainty and into the mystery of the unknown of full time business operation. I was afraid. The universe intervened. I was painted into a corner where leaving the job seemed risky, but the available options achievable. As soon as I turned in my papers, business opportunities came rushing in. Things were going in the direction my intuition promised. But my challenges weren’t surpassed yet. I retired September 2019. March 2020 the world shut down. I had no income for 6 months. When business finally picked up a little, I discovered I had stage 3.5 colon cancer and horrible diabetes. It took me until April 2021 to reverse these two conditions.

During this snow-covered winter of my life, I confronted myself. I considered the direction of my life. I had to face dark truths during the cold of my wintery silence. I endured a “dark night of the soul.” But I grew. During what seemed like a bleak leafless repose, I, like a tree, grew deeper roots and another ring around my life. Like a tree, I had to lose my leaves and endure the cold winds to bloom again with new buds.

Like an arrow, I could not fly forward unless I was first pulled backward, stressed against the string, watching helplessly as the bow creaked, yielding to the pressure. But Spring has now come. I am launched forward, toward more fulfilling targets. Red circles of promise and greater reward. My life is renewed.

When winter sets in on your life, never forget that this may very well be the leafless solitude you need to stretch your roots, grow a new ring, and lift your buds to the Spring sun.

The universe doesn’t punish us in the silence of our winters, but reminds us that we need to slow down and reflect on how deep our roots penetrate into truth and how high our branches reach into success.

Cherish the snow and embrace the winter. Emerge renewed.
